Offshore development can give a startup senior engineering capacity at a sustainable cost—or turn into months of missed deadlines. The difference is almost always visible before you sign, if you know what to check.
1. Meet the people who will write the code
Ask to speak with the actual engineers, not only a sales contact. Ask them to explain a past project in detail: the architecture, what went wrong and how they fixed it. Seniority shows quickly in how people talk about trade-offs.
2. Check how they communicate
Agree the rhythm before you start: daily or weekly check-ins, a shared task board, written updates and demos of working software. Teams that send screenshots instead of a link you can click are hiding progress.
3. Plan around time-zone overlap
You do not need a full shared day, but you do need a few predictable hours for decisions. Ask exactly which hours overlap with yours and what happens to questions that come up outside them.
4. Protect your IP from day one
Sign a mutual NDA before sharing details, make sure the contract states clearly who owns the code and intellectual property, and agree how and when you will get access to the source code.
5. Start small, then scale
Begin with a paid discovery phase, a prototype or a two-to-four-week first milestone. It is the cheapest way to see real output, communication and code quality before you commit to a larger engagement.
